I love this recipe because it is one of those easy treats you can make whenever you are craving something sweet but don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. The dough comes together in just a few minutes, and the little doughnuts are delicious served warm with a generous dusting of powdered sugar.

They are perfect for breakfast, an afternoon treat, or a quick homemade dessert with a cup of coffee or tea. If you have some Greek yogurt in the refrigerator, this is a great recipe to try.

How to make easy no-yeast yogurt doughnuts

Begin with whisking together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl. Add beaten eggs, vanilla extract, and Greek yogurt, mixing until combined.

In a medium skillet or pot, heat oil over medium heat. Drop teaspoons of dough into the oil or use a piping bag to squeeze out 1-inch (2.5 cm) pieces of dough and cut with scissors for each doughnut.

Allow the doughnuts to fry until they fluff up and turn golden brown on all sides, turning them around if needed with a spatula.

Once cooked, transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil. Dust with powdered sugar before serving and enjoy!

Tips for Making the Best Yogurt Doughnuts

  • Use thick Greek yogurt. It gives the dough the right consistency and helps keep the doughnuts soft.
  • Don’t make the doughnuts too large. Small pieces cook more evenly and puff up nicely.
  • Keep the oil at medium heat. If it is too hot, the outside can brown before the inside is cooked.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan. Frying too many at once can lower the oil temperature.
  • Fry in small batches. This helps the doughnuts cook evenly and makes them easier to turn.
  • Serve them warm. They are especially good shortly after frying, while the outside is lightly crisp and the inside is soft.

Can I Make These Doughnuts Without Yeast?

Yes! That’s exactly what makes this recipe so quick. Instead of yeast, these doughnuts use baking powder as the leavening agent. There is no proofing or rising time, so you can mix the dough and start frying right away.

Can I Use Regular Yogurt Instead of Greek Yogurt?

Greek yogurt works best because it is thick and gives the dough the right consistency. If using regular yogurt, choose a thick, plain yogurt rather than a very runny one. The consistency of the dough may vary slightly depending on the yogurt you use.

Can I Use Non-Fat Greek Yogurt?

Yes. You can use plain non-fat Greek yogurt in this recipe. The dough may have a slightly different texture, but it should still work well.

How Do I Know When the Doughnuts Are Done?

The doughnuts should be puffed and golden brown on all sides. Because they are small, they cook fairly quickly. If they are browning very quickly, reduce the heat slightly so the centers have enough time to cook through.

How to Store Yogurt Doughnuts

These doughnuts are best served fresh and warm. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for a day or two.

For the best texture, warm them briefly before serving and dust with fresh powdered sugar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do yogurt doughnuts need yeast?

No. These are no-yeast doughnuts made with baking powder, so there is no need to let the dough rise.

Why are my doughnuts not fluffy?

Make sure your baking powder is fresh and avoid making the pieces of dough too large. Also, make sure the oil is hot enough before frying.

Can I bake these yogurt doughnuts instead of frying them?

This particular recipe is designed for frying, which gives the doughnuts their characteristic golden exterior and fluffy center. If you prefer baked doughnuts, I would recommend making a recipe specifically developed for baking rather than simply changing the cooking method.

Can I make these doughnuts ahead of time?

They are best freshly fried. Since the dough takes only a few minutes to prepare, I recommend making them shortly before serving.
